Saul GOLDSCHLAG, born on March 25th, 1891 in Rohatyn, Galicia/Austro-Hungarian Empire [later: Poland, today: Рогатин/Ukraine] (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Rohatyn (since 1919 Poland), from 1924 on: Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: first Ukraine, from 1919 on Poland, from 1925 on Austria) was not enrolled at the University of Vienna any more in 1938, but was preparing for the final examinations ("Rigorosen"). He was the son of Mechel (Michael) Goldschlag, merchant in Rohatyn (descendant of Chaskel and Tema Goldschlag from Rohatyn]. Saul Goldschlag lived in Vienna's 9th district, Marktgasse 6/13 (till October 1926), 1926-1932 in Vienna's 2nd district, Ausstellungsstrasse 7/10. After he had passed primary school ("Volks- und Buergerschule"), he started to work in his fathers shop. Therefor it took until 1912 before he could start his secondary education and finally graduated from high school (kk. secondary-education-examination-commission at the Bundesgymnasium in Vienna's 2nd district) on June 24th, 1915 (in his CV he mentions the date 1919). In 1919, 28 years old, he began his studies in law at the Law School of the University of Vienna. He was enrolled from spring term 1919 till fall term 1923/24 (without gaining an academic degree), but left to become a clerk at the bank "Wiener Giro-Cassa-Verein". In 1925 he lost his job, married Henia Aschheim (born January 14/15th, 1898 in Vienna), got Austrian citizenship and enrolled again, this time at the Philosophical School from fall term 1925/26 till fall term 1928/29 and took courses in history and geography. He registered for the final exams in history on April 1st, 1930. His dissertation "Vienna's leading press and the French-German War 1870/71" ("Wiener fuehrende Presse und der deutsch-franzoesische Krieg 1870/71") was accepted ("approbiert") on May 23rd, 1930, from his doctoral advisors, the historians Wilhelm Bauer (1877–1953) und Alfons Dopsch (1868–1953). The "Absolutorium" was issued only 5 years later on March 6th, 1935. Than the process stopped again for 2 more years for no recognizable reason until he passed the first "Rigorosum" on July 1st, 1937 with Bauer, Dopsch und Hugo Hassinger (1877–1952, with him only after reprobation on July 12th, 1937), than again it took another year – and meanwhile the "Anschluss" has changed everything – before he attended the second "Rigorosum" on July 6th, 1938 with the philosophers Otto Tumlirz (1890–1957) and Hans Eibel (1882–1958). He passed this examination too and could finally finish the promotional procedure at the age of 47 and graduated on July 21st, 1938, but only with the discriminating ceremony of a "non-aryan-promotion", which included at the same time that he was banned from his profession. He was able to emigrate with his wife Henia (Halla) to Geneva/Switzerland, where he continued to live for the rest of his life. His only son, Dr. Hugo Goldschlag (born June 21st, 1926 in Vienna), cardiologist, lived and worked there too until he passed away in 2009. Saul Goldschlag died in 1987 and is burried at the Jewish Cemetery in Veyrier, Geneva/Switzerland.
