Oswald HABERMANN (Oswald Yehoshua HABERMAN), born on February 7
th, 1915 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Rowaruska/Poland [Rawa-Ruska Рава-Руська/Ukraine], Citizenship: Poland), son of Markus Leib Habermann (Rabbi, 1882-1945) and Sima Habermann, née Schorr (1885-1926), lived in Vienna's 9
th district, Meynertgasse 6/9, was enrolled finally in the fall term 1937/38 at the Philosophical School in the 2
nd year of his studies and took courses in History, Oriental Studies and Philosophy (Leaving Certificate ('Abgangszeugnis') was issued on May 27
th, 1938).
His elder brother
Jakob Habermann (1912-1975), who studied at the Philosophical School, too, passed his first final exam (Rigorosum) in December 1937, but was also expelled from the University of Vienna in 1938 and was no more allowed to finish his studies.
Oswald Habermann had to flee Austria and was able to leave for Switzerland in time to stay with his uncle Alexander Habermann in Zurich and await his US visa, which he received in Zurich on July 7
th, 1939. He was then able to emigrate to the U.S. from Le Havre, France on the
SS Ile de France on July 15
th, 1939 and arrived in New York City, NY on July 21
th, 1939, where his father was already living at 1512 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn, as was his brother Israel. He studied briefly at New York University and was mustered into the US Army in October 1940. He became a U.S. citizen on December 14
th, 1944, and later lived at 8110 135
th St. Apt 605, Jamaica, New York.
Oswald (Yehoshua) Haberman died on June 16
th, 1997 in New York, USA.
