Josef Bick

Josef BICK (born on May 22nd, 1880 in Wildeck b.Heilbronn, died on April 5th, 1952 in Piesting) was assistant professor ("Privatdozent, tit. ao. Prof.") for Classical Philology at the Philosophical School of the University of Vienna. He also was director of the Austrian National Library since 1926, and director of the "Graphical Collection Albertina".

In times of Austrofascism he was announced president of the "Bundes-Kulturrat" and Vicepresident of the "Bundestag".

He was persecuted in times of Nazism because of his political orientation lost his positions and was thrown out of the university in 1938.

He was deported to the concentration-camp Dachau and later on to Sachsenhausen with the first Austrian transport. He was released in August 1938, could return to Austria but had to retire without a pension and had to leave Vienna. He was grounded in Piesting/Lower Austria till the end of the war and returned back to his positions in 1945.
