Heinz HOCHERMANN (BAUER), born on November 28^th, 1914 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria), son of Ing. Siegfried Hochermann (1881-1942, engineer, chemist, merchant) and Ida, née Boscovitz (1895-1983, divorced in January 1932, remarried in May 1932 to Dr. Alfred Bauer, 1891-1968), lived in Vienna's 6^th district, Koestlergasse 8. He had started to study medicine at the University of Vienna after his school-leaving examination in 1933 and was enrolled finally in the spring term 1938 at the Medical School in the 5^th year of his studies and was a member of the Zionist Student Association. In 1938, after the takeover of power of National-Socialism he was forced to quit his studies for racist reason and to leave the University of Vienna. He had to flee from Vienna and completed a masseur course and a short apprenticeship as a painter in order to improve his chances. In June 1938 he was able to emigrate with his mother, her second husband Dr. Alfred Bauer and with his brother Herbert Hochermann (Bower, 1917-2002) via Paris/France to London/Great Britain. From there he sailed with his brother on July 1^st, 1938 from Southampton with the SS Watussi to Mombassa to the then British Crown Colony of Kenya/East Africa and further on to Nairobi. He was unable to continue his studies there, however, and began working as a farmer in Eldoret. On February 4, 1939, he married his former fellow student Elisabeth Heller (1914-1992), a Viennese who was also forced to leave the University of Vienna and to emigrate from Austria to Kenya in 1938. On October 26^th, 1940, their son John David Bauer was born, and on August 13^th, 1944, their daughter Judith Ann Bauer (later married to Shemper, d. 2008). Heinz Hochermann, now Bauer, had worked as a butcher in a sausage manufactory in Nairobi and later in Nyeri since 1942, he emigrated with his wife and their two children to the USA in 1946. On May 20^th, 1946, they departed from Durban, South Africa, on the SS Marine Tiger to the United States where they arrived in New York City, NY, on June 8^th, 1946. Heinz Bauer's mother and step father emigrated from Mombassa/Kenya to the USA in August 1946 (Norfork, Virginia) and together with his brother 1947 further on to Canada. In the USA, Heinz Bauer was able to resume his medical studies at Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia from 1947-1951 and received his M.D. in 1951. His wife Elizabeth became a research assistant and nursery school teacher, and he worked as a trainee at the National Cancer Institute, Emory University, 1954-56, and researched and taught as a faculty member at Emory University Medical School 1956-61: 1956 associate in pathology, 1957 assistant professor, 1959 associate professor (and was president of the Atlanta Society of Pathologists 1959-60 and president of the Atlanta chap, Z.O.A, adv. to Hillel Chap, Emory Univ. 1960-1961).
In 1961 he joined the medical School of Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., as a faculty member: clinical associate professor in 1961, associate professor in 1963, full professor of pathology in 1965. At the same time he did research at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Washington D.C. since 1961 and as Research Associate at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York City, NY 1961-1964, specializing in immunopathology, infectious diseases and rheumatology.

Heinz Bauer was a member of numerous medical societies, including the Washington State Society of Pathologists (President), the American Association of Pathologists and Bacteriologists, the New York Academy of Science, the American Society of Experimental Pathology, the International Academy of Pathology (IAP), the Atlanta Board of Jewish Education and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society (ΑΩΑ).

Prof. Dr. Heinz Bauer, née Hochermann, died on August 25^th, 2003 in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia/USA and is buried at King David Memorial Gardens in Fairfax County, Virginia/USA.
