Hans Peter SCHWARZ, born on June 13th, 1913 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ("heimatberechtigt") for Vienna/Austria, citizenship 1938: Austria), son of Doz. Dr. Oswald Schwarz (university lecturer for urology), lived in Vienna's 8th. district, Alser Strasse 37, was enrolled finally in the fall term 1937/38 at the Medical School in the 5th and last year of his studies .
He was preparing for the final exams ("Rigorosen"). He could finally finish his studies ("Absolutorium" was certified on July 18th, 1938) and graduate on July 21st, 1938, but only with the discriminating ceremony of a "Nichtarierpromotion", which included at the same time that he was banned from his profession.
In times of Nazism he was deprived of his academic degree "Dr. med." on July 22nd, 1943 with the racist argument, that he as a Jew was not considered dignified an academic degree of a German university ("eines akademischen Grades einer deutschen Hochschule unwuerdig").
It took 12 years since the deprivation - and a very long time since the end of Nazism - until the regranting of the doctorate took finally place on May 15th, 1955.
Hans Peter Schwarz left Vienna in 1938 after the Anschluss and went to London where his father Oswald Schwarz (and mother and brother) had lived since 1934. He emigrated to the United States in 1939.
He practiced cardiology and internal medicine for more than 40 years in Norwich, Connecticut, where he was on the staff of the W.W. Backus Hospital and had a large/successful private practice which was still growing/vibrant when he died on September 12th, 1985 of a heart attack.
He was a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and was active in the American Medical Association and other medical professional organizations.
Hans Peter Schwarz was a devout Catholic throughout his life in the United States. It is not known when he became a Catholic. He never returned to Vienna in his lifetime and rarely spoke of his life there, his time at the University, or how he left the country after the Anschluss.
He was married for 41 years to Mary Alice O’Connor, a native of Connecticut, and had five children and two grandchildren.
