Friedrich MEYER, born on November 14th, 1918 in Vienna (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna, was a son of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Stefan Meyer [33514] (director of the radium institute in Vienna) and Emilie, nee Mahs. The family lived in Vienna 1, Dr. Karl Luegerring 6. After graduation of the high school at The Abbey of our Lady of the Scotts Friedrich Meyer enrolled at Vienna University Law School and after the "Anschluss" he was in the spring term 1938 at the Law School in the 2nd year of his studies. Friedrichs father Prof. Stefan Meyer was also expelled from Vienna University for racist reason in 1938, as well as Friedrichs sister Agathe Meyer, who finished her studies in chemistry at the philosophical school, but was expelled after the first final exam ("Erste Rigorosenprüfung") in spring term 1938, without an academic degree. Fred could flee to Great Britain but was interned there as "enemy alien" and was deported to Australia with the ship HMT "Dunera". After his release he returned to England. Frederick Meyer became a well known Reader in Economics at Exeter University, and the mentor and friend of generations of students. After getting both a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics he worked in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, before going to Manchester University. In 1949 he moved to the then University College of the South West, which in 1955 became Exeter University. Fred stayed there until his retirement as Reader in International Economics in 1984. His main books include: British Colonies in World Trade (1948), Great Britain, The Sterling Area and Europe (1952), United Kingdom Trade with Europe (1957), The Terms of Trade (1962), The Functions of Sterling (1973), International Trade Policy (1978) and the co-authored Problems of a Mature Economy (1970). In 1948 he married Jean Jenkin (died in 1996) and they had two sons, Steven and John He deceased on September 23, 2004 in Exeter/GB.
