Erwin DEUTSCH (DEUTSCH-KEMPNY), born on April 12^th, 1917 in Klagenfurt, Carinthia/Austria (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Klagenfurt/Carinthia, Citizenship: Austria), son of Ing. Julius Deutsch (senior railway official, deceased) and Maria Deutsch (Klagenfurt). In 1935 he graduated from high school ("Reifeprüfung/"Matura") in Klagenfurt and started to study medicine at the University of Vienna in fall term 1935/36. First he lived in a dormitory in Vienna's 8^th district, Pfeilgasse 4, later in Vienna's 7^th district, Siebensterngasse 2/I/15. He was enrolled in spring term 1938 at the Medical School in the 3^rd year of his studies. After the takeover of power by National Socialism ("Anschluss") in March 1938, he was considered a "Mischling I. Grades" and was only able to continue his studies to a limited extent and provisionally with revocation at any time.
In contrast to many others, he managed to continue his studies until the first trimester of 1940. He was also able to complete his studies on March 1^st, 1940 and was appointed "Dr. med. univ." But at the same time he was banned from his profession and his doctor's diploma was provided with a "blocking clause" that he was "not entitled to practice medicine in the German Reich". Nevertheless, he managed to work at various hospitals in Germany and after the end of National Socialism in 1946 he returned to Vienna and to the 1^st Medical University Clinic as an X-ray specialist and internist and temporarily took over its X-ray ward. This was followed by several research stays in the USA and in 1952 he was able to habilitate at the University of Vienna with research on the recognition of inhibitory haemophilia and established a haemophilia centre at the Vienna General Hospital (AKH).
He was married to Alma Deutsch (1922-1989). Dr. Erwin Deutsch became particularly well known for his work on blood coagulation, especially for his research on the recognition of inhibitory hemophilia, and he was also a co-founder of internal intensive care medicine in Austria. On June 16^th, 1964 he was appointed full professor of internal medicine and head of the 1st Medical University Clinic in Vienna from 1964 to 1987. He was represented in the highest medical expert committees of Austria and organized many congresses, including the only congress of the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) in 1973. In 1966 he founded the Austrian Haemophilia Society (OeHG) and was a member of numerous scientific associations such as the New York Academy of Science, the American College of Physicians, the Austrian Academy of Sciences (1973 w.M.), the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina in Halle/Saale (o.M.) and the German Society for Intensive Care Medicine. Erwin Deutsch has received many honours (including the Prize of the City of Vienna for Natural Sciences (1968), the Golden Medal of the City of Klagenfurt (1974), an honorary doctorate from the Justus Liebig University in Giessen (1977), the Grand Silver Medal of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria (1981), the appointment of "Prof. Deutsch Gasse" in Klagenfurt (1995), …). He wrote over 400 scientific papers and published numerous books, including Die Hemmkörperhaemophilie (1948), Blutgerinnungsfaktoren (1955), Blutgerinnung und Operation (1973), Laboratoriumsdiagnostik (1990). The Austrian Society for Internal Medicine and General Intensive Care Medicine founded an award named after Erwin Deutsch, which is awarded annually to support young scientists in the field of internal intensive care medicine. The University Library of the Medical University of Vienna holds his extensive collection of about 20,000 separate prints on the topics of haematology, internal medicine, kidney, thrombosis from the 1950s to the 1990s. Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Erwin Deutsch-Kempny died on July 15^th, 1992 in Vienna and is burried at the Vienna Central Cemetery.
