Erich Norbert HALICZER (later Eric Norbert HALLISTER), born on March 13th, 1915 in Leipzig/Germany (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Aalfang, district of Gmünd/Lower Austria, Citizenship: Austria), son of Josef Haliczer (merchant, deceased), had spent most of his childhood and youth in Leipzig, where he started his studies. He moved to Vienna, where he lived in the 9th district, Lackierergasse 6/6 at Lustig.
Haliczer was enrolled finally in fall term 1937/38 at the Philosophical School of the University of Vienna in the 4th year of his studies and took courses in History, English and Romance language and literature Studies.
After the "Anschluss“ Haliczer was able to emigrate to Australia together with his family just in 1938, where he anglicized his name in Eric Norbert Hallister. He settled in Melbourne and – although compelled to study mainly as a part-time student –, completed the Honours course in Germanic languages and the Diploma of Education at the University of Melbourne. At the beginning of 1948 he became assistant lecturer in German in the University of Queensland. In 1949 he married his wife Enid.
Eric Norbert Hallister became lecturer in German in 1953 and was head of the Department of German of the University of Queensland in 1954. Besides he was working for a Ph.D. degree at the University of Melbourne at the same time. He spent 1955 on study leave in West Germany.
He was the leading experts in Australia on the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke, had a broad knowledge in every part of the German language and literature and in a number of fields of German philosophy, particularly Existentialism. Furthermore, he had qualifications in other languages and literature.
Hallister died on September 2nd, 1956, at the age of 41 years in Corinda/Australia. His obituary was published by the University of Queensland Gazette – in the same month the gazette published his last article "The Problem of University Reform in West Germany".
