Elisabeth HELLER (later married BAUER), born on October 1
st, 1914 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria), daughter of Moritz Heller (merchant, 1876-1948) and Frieda Heller, née Feigenbaum (1880-1976), lived in Vienna's 19
th district, Sieveringer Strasse 20.
After she had graduated from girl's high school ('Maedchenrealgymnasium') in Vienna 18
th district in June 1934, she began to study medicine at the University of Vienna in fall term 1934/35. She was enrolled finally in the fall term 1937/38 at the Medical School in the 4
th year of her studies (fall term 1937/38 was validated on February 14
th, 1938).
In 1938, after the takeover of power of National-Socialism she was forced to quit her studies for racist reason and to leave the University of Vienna.
She had to flee from Vienna and completed a nursing course in order to improve her chances. In 1938 she was able to emigrate via Southampton/Great Britain to the then British Crown Colony of Kenya/East Africa. She was unable to continue her studies there, however, and began working as a nurse. On February 4
th, 1939, she married her former fellow student
Heinz Hochermann (Bauer) (1914-2003), a Viennese who was also forced to leave the University of Vienna and to emigrate from Austria to Kenya in 1938, too. On October 26
th, 1940, their son John David Bauer was born, and on August 13
th, 1944, their daughter Judith Ann Bauer (later married to Shemper, 1944-2008). Her husband Heinz Bauer worked as a farmer, later as butcher in a sausage manufactory in Nairobi.
They left Kenya with their two children in 1946. On May 20
th, 1946, they departed from Mombasa/Kenya via Durban/South Africa, on the
SS Marine Tiger to the United States where they arrived in New York City, NY, on June 8
th, 1946. Alsoher parents - Moritz und Frieda Heller - could leave Austria in time and emigrated to London, England in 1939 and in 1943 via Liverpool, England/Great Britain to the USA where they lived with her sister Gertrude Heller, since 1938 married Fischbach (1917-2010), in New York City.
In the USA, Elizabeth Bauer was not able to resume her medical studies and became a research assistant and nursery school teacher. But her husband Heinz Bauer could resume his studies and received his M.D. in 1951. He became a pathologist and a professor at Emory University, ans in 1961 at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., specializing in immunopathology, infectious diseases and rheumatology.
Elizabeth Bauer, née Heller, deceased on December 15
th, 1992, aged 78, in Georgetown, D.C., District of Columbia, USA and is buried at King David Memorial Gardens in Fairfax County, Virginia/USA.
