Lisa Antonia NEUMANN, born on June 8th, 1913 in Vienna, daughter of Jaques Neumann (employee) and his wife Hedwig. She had graduated from highschool "Maedchenrealgymnasium des Wiener Frauenerwerbsvereins" and has then studied psychology at the University of Vienna with Karl and Charlotte Buehler.
She wasn't enrolled at the Philosophical School any more in 1938, but was preparing for the final exams ('Rigorosen') in psychology. She registered for the final examinations on December 1st, 1937, and passed the first 'Rigorosum' on December 7th, 1937. Her dissertation 'Die Rolle der Eltern im Leben des Jugendlichen' was accepted by Karl psychologist Buehler and paedagogue Richard Meister on February 8th, 1938, and she also passed the second 'Rigorosum' on March 4th, 1938. She could finally finish her studies and graduated on July 21st, 1938, but only with the discriminating ceremony of a 'Nichtarierpromotion', which included at the same time that she was banned from her profession.
"
Lisa Neumann was able to emigrate to the USA in the same year, where she first worked at the Bellevue Hospital in New York from 1938 to 1938, and later was Clinical Intern at the Worcester Child Guidance Clinic in Worcester/Massachusetts in then in 1939/40. For the establishment of her professional career in the emigration, the doctorate and the completed study turned out to be very requirement to get adequate occupation and employment possibilities in her field.
