Gustav MORGENSTERN (born on October 8th, 1882 in Ungar. Ostra/Mähren (Uherský Ostroh/Tschechien), died on June 10th, 1947 in Linz), had graduated at the Law School at the University of Vienna on November 30th, 1906 with the academic degree 'Dr. iur.'.
In times of Nazism he was deprived of his academic degree on May 8th, 1941 with the racist argument, that he as a Jew was not considered dignified an academic degree of a German university ('eines akademischen Grades einer deutschen Hochschule unwürdig').
Gustav Morgenstern moved from Vienna to Linz in 1909. His office was appropriated by the Gestapo in 1938, 1939 he was excluded from the lawyer chmaber. He and his wife were able to emigrate to Tel Aviv, Palestine [Israel] in 1938. In December 1946 he returned to Linz and died there in June 1947.
It took 62 years since the deprivation - and a very long time since the end of Nazism - until the regranting of the doctorate took finally place on April 10th, 2003 posthumously in a solemn ceremony.

Lit.: MAYRHOFER/SCHUSTER 2001, 1333, 1359; POSCH/STADLER 2005.
