Elias Ludwig MENKES, born on January 3rd, 1914 in Sambor, Galicia/Austro-Hungarian Empire [later: Poland, today: Sambir/Ukraine] (entitled residency ("heimatberechtigt") for Sambor/Poland, citizenship 1938: Poland), son of Adolf Menkes (lawyer), lived in Vienba's 9th district, Lackierergasse 1/2, was enrolled finally in the fall term of 1937/38 at the Medical School in the 5th and last year of his studies.
In 1938 he was forced to quit his studies and to leave the University of Vienna for racist reason after the takeover of power of National-Socialism. But after numerous incertainties he could finally finish his studies ("Absolutorium" was certified on December 15th, 1938) and graduated on December 16th, 1938, but only with the discriminating ceremony of a "Nichtarierpromotion", which included at the same time that he was banned from his profession.
