Selig MARGULIES, born on November 5th, 1904 in Suszczyn, Galicia/Austria-Hungarian Empire [later: Poland, today: Suszczyn|Сущин/Ukraine], graduated from the III State Grammar School in Czernowitz/Romania and passed his final examinations there on July 9th, 1924.
He then enrolled in History and Romance studies at the Philosophical School of the University of Vienna from the spring term of 1925 to the fall term of 1928/29. In July 1929 he submitted his dissertation in history: "The Origin of the Romanians" (supervisors: Prof. Oswald Redlich and Alphons Dopsch), which was approved on November 14th, 1929, but did not immediately pass the final rigorous examinations/viva voces ("Rigorosen") but only five years later on May 12th, 1934 the one-hour viva ("Philosophicum") under Prof. Moritz Schlick and Robert Reininger.
He was therefore no longer enrolled at the Philosophical School in 1938, but had already been in the final examinations stage for some time.
After the Anschluss in 1938, he was forced for racist reasons to abandon the examination procedure for the time being and to leave the University of Vienna, but after a longer period of uncertainty, he was still able to take the two-hour viva on June 25th, 1938, and after passing the examination he was able to graduate on July 21st, 1938, but only under numerous symbolic discriminations in the context of a "non-Aryan doctorate", while at the same time being banned from working in the entire German Reich.
He had to flee Vienna, but before that he married Frieda Korn (1918-1942) in the temple in Pazmanitengasse and was able to emigrate with her in time to London, England.
After the early death of his first wife, he married Anna Seidmann in Marylebone, London, in the spring of 1947.
He died on November 7th, 1992 in London, England/Great Britain and was buried in Bushey, Hertfordshire, England.
