Rosl (Rosa Marie) KRAUS (married: EBNER), born on February 24th, 1915 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna/Austria, citizenship 1938: Austria), daughter of Julius Kraus (1869-1934) and his wife Mizzi, née Fuchs (1877-1915), lived in Vienna's 18th district, Messerschmidtgasse 46, was enrolled finally in spring term 1938 at the Medical School in the 4th year of her studies.
In 1938, after the takeover of power of National-Socialism she was forced to quit her studies for racist reason and to leave the University of Vienna (spring term 1938 was validated on July 18th, 1947). She wrote in a letter about her expulsion:
"Ich stand buchstäblich allein da, ich war also auf einmal als Jüdin mit nur noch wenigen jüdischen gleichaltrigen Freunden beisammen, besser gesagt, wenig beisammen, man hatte ja Angst, dass das auffallen könnte im Haus. Also ganz persönlich, ganz individuell, eben als Atom ohne echte Ideologie hat man sich halt recht verloren gefühlt, und es ist kein Wunder, dass viele sich selbst umgebracht haben."
She emigrated via Paris to Great Britain, where she was involved in the activities of the „Free Austrian Movement“ and of the „Austrian Self Aid“. She married the lawyer Hugo Ebner, who also had emigrated from Vienna, and they had two sons, born in 1943 and in 1953.
The family remigrated to Vienna in 1946 and Rosl Ebner succeeded in finishing her medical studies at the University of Vienna in 1952. She opened a private practice in 1957. In addition, she was active in many areas of social work with youth and disabled persons, and also in the development aid.
Rosl Ebner died on February 2nd, 1994 in Vienna.
