Friedrich KRATTER, born on July 9th, 1911 in Galicia/Austro-Hungarian Empire [later: Stanisławów/Poland, today: Iwano-Frankiwsk|Івано-Франківськ/Ukraine] (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria), son of Dr. David Kratter (lawyer, 1876-1936) and Leonore Kratter (1889-1944), lived in Vienna's 1st district, Dorotheergasse 6/20. He had graduated from high school in Vienna's 2nd district ("Realgymnasium Wien II") and then enrolled at the Medical School od the University of Vienna. He was finally enrolled in spring term 1938 in the 4th and pre to last year of his studies (Leaving Certificate ('Abgangszeugnis') was issued on May 18th, 1938).
In 1938, after the takeover of power of National-Socialism, he was forced to quit his studies for racist reason and to leave the University of Vienna.
He had to flee from Vienna and could emigrate together with his mother to Great Britain in August 1938. First they settled in Manchester and Friedrich Kratter obtained a place in Manchester University Medical school to continue his medical studies and worked at at the Manchester Royal Infirmary. In 1939 Friedrich Kratter was exempted from internment as a medical student first, but was finally interned from June to October 1940 in a camp at the Isle of Man as "enemy alien" together with many oth Austrian and German immigrants. Later he lived in 67, Albert Avenue, Prestwich, Lancashire. While his mother was occupied with "unpaid domestic duties" (she deceased in October 1944 in Manchester), he could finish his medical studies, graduated and became a medical practitioner and married his wife Kathleen. On June 21st, 1947 both were naturalized and became British citizens.
On qualifying as a doctor Friedrich Kattler took up psychiatry and passed many examinations in psychiatry and psychology and worked in various hospitals. After the war he took up a position in the United States of America in different states then after several years returned to England as Medical Director in a large hospital where he met his second wife Valerie. He also worked as a forensic psychiatrist for the Home Office, visiting prisons and special hospitals to assess prisoners.
Friedrich Kratter deceased, aged 98, on August 6th, 2009 in Blackburn Lancashire, England.
