Kurt BAUER, born on September 23
rd, 1914 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria), son of Dr. Hugo Bauer (lawyer, 1876-1938) and Herta, née Koritschoner, lived in Wien 1
st district, Singerstrasse 27, was enrolled finally in the spring term 1938 at the Law School in the 4
th and last year of his studies.
In 1938, after the takeover of power of National-Socialism he was forced to quit his her studies for racist reason and to leave the University of Vienna.
He had to flee from Austria. His father, who had received his doctorate in law from the University of Vienna in 1902 and had worked in Vienna since 1909 as a lawyer with an office in Vienna's 1
st district, Schellinggasse 3, was forced to close his law office for racist reasons and committed suicide in October 1938.
Kurt Bauer was able to get to Zurich/Switzerland, where he also married his wife, Eugenia Wenkert (1904-2004), who had also been expelled from Vienna, on November 11
th, 1938, and from there he organized their emigration to the USA. On July 10
th, 1939, they were able to obtain their U.S. visas at the U.S. Embassy in Zurich, and on July 25
th they emigrated to the U.S. via Boulogne sur Mer/France on the
SS Statendam, arriving in New York, NY on August 1
st, 1939. The initial plan to travel on to San Diego, California was not pursued and they remained in New York City, NY. Kurt Bauer was mustered into the US Army in October 1940 - he was then working for
S. Nathan & Co Inc in New York City, NY and living with his wife at 215 W. 100
th str., Manhattan, New York, later moving to 301 E. 38
th St # 301.
Kurt Bauer died on March 23
rd, 2005 in New York City, NY/USA.
