Johann HOLKUP, born on September 5th, 1918, in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ("heimatberechtigt") for Vienna/Austria, citizenship 1938: Austria), son of Josef Holkup (1888-1971, piano maker) and Theresia, née Kasáčik (1892-1973), lived in Vienna's 13th (today: 14th) district, Hernstorferstrasse 11/1/7 and had begun to study medicine at the University of Vienna in the fall term of 1936/37 and was last enrolled at the Medical School in the fall term of 1938/39, whereby this semester was subsequently no longer counted as creditable "due to lack of frequency" - it would have been his 3rd year study.
After the takeover of power of National-Socialism he was forced to quit his studies and to leave the University of Vienna in 1939 for political reasons.
He was arrested by the Gestapo in Brno on April 18th, 1939, for anti-Nazi activities and, after more than 2 months in Gestapo custody there, was transferred to the prison of the Regional Court for Criminal Matters Vienna I on June 1st, 1939. After a conviction for high treason and treason against the country in accordance with Article 90c of the German Criminal Code (judgment 6 J 153/39 g People's Court Vienna of December 15th, 1939, to 2 years in prison), he was released from prison on May 15th, 1941. His leaving certificate was issued on May 20th, 1941, nearly three years after he was no longer been able to enroll (stamp: "Belonged to the University of Vienna from October 21st, 1936, until the end of the fall term 1938/39. The lectures and exercises attended during this time are included in his study book. | Nothing detrimental has become known about his conduct").
He later submitted an application for "gnadenweise Zulassung zum Hochschulstudium", but this was rejected by the Reich Ministry of Education in Berlin on April 3rd, 1944, without giving any reasons (the application itself is not in the holdings of the archive).
After the end of National Socialism, he was considered a "severely damaged" member of the Committee of Damaged University Students in Vienna and was able to resume his medical studies and could graduate as "Dr.med.univ." at the University of Vienna on May 9th, 1947, after his prison sentence was also expunged on April 11th and he was once again considered to be of impeccable character.
In the post-war period, he was active as a functionary of the Committee of Victimized Students in Vienna (responsible for representing graduates), as well as a functionary of the Association of Victimized Doctors in Vienna. He married on August 12th, 1950, Anna Johanna Petrik (1918-2006) in Vienna's 9th district - in church on August 12th, 1955, in Seewiesen/Styria. From the end of 1951 he also had an apartment in Vienna's 9th district, Spitalgasse 27/5, but continued to live in his parents' apartment, finally in Vienna's 19th district, Haubenbiglstrasse 10 in 1981.
He died on January 7th, 2014, in Vienna and is buried at Vienna-Grinzing cemetery.
