Marianne HOCHDORF, born on February 12th, 1912 in Vienna wasn't enrolled at the Philosophical School any more in 1938, but was preparing for the final exams ('Rigorosen'). She registered for the final exams in English language and literature Studies on May 25th, 1936, and passed the first 'Rigorosum' on June 12th, 1937. Her dissertation 'Alfred Austin als Dramatiker' was accepted on January 27th, 1937, and she also passed the second 'Rigorosum' on October 29th, 1938. She could finally finish her studies and graduated on October 31st, 1938, but only with the discriminating ceremony of a 'Nichtarierpromotion', which included at the same time that she was banned from her profession.
She had to flee from Austria and escaped from Vienna to London in August 1939 and became a schoolteacher. Eventually she married Herbert Freeden, writer and journalist, and her only son Michael Freeden was born in 1944. The family emigrated to Jerusalem in 1950. In 1993 they settled in Oxford, UK where their son was a professor.
Marianne Freeden, nee Hochdorf, died on 24 August 2003 aged 91.
