Heinrich Josef HAAS, born on February 4
th, 1911 in Vienna (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria), son of Ing. Kuno Haas (b. 1877 in Neudorf, building officer at the railway, "Oberbaurat") and his wife Grete nee Silberstern (b. 1891), lived in Vienna 9
th district, Glasergasse 4/9.
After he had graduated from secondary school ("Bundesrealschule") in Vienna 9th district, he enrolled at the Philosophical School of the University of Vienna and attended lectures in Latin and philosophical propedeutics from fall term 1928/29 until spring term 1929.
After that he completed studies at the Technical University of Vienna and specialized as construction engineer and surveying technician, esp. for structural engineering and construction of railways. In seven years of practicing he was involved in the building of "Gemeindebauten", a form of social apartment building in Vienna, of the Stadlauer Bridge in Vienna and of several road- and railway constructions.
Haas also completed the State examination for advertising specialists and began to study at the Law School of the University of Vienna in fall term 1937/38 and was enrolled finally in spring term 1938 in the 1st year of his studies.
In 1938, after the takeover of power of National-Socialism he was forced to quit his studies for racist reason and to leave the University of Vienna.
Heinrich Josef Haas was able to emigrate to via Genua/Italy to Shanghai [China] in August 1938, where he was employed as a construction engineer at the "Bureau des Architectes des Credit Foncier d’Extreme Orient" in Tientsin [Tianjin/China]. His sister Irmgard Haas (b. 1920 in Vienna) followed him in February 1939 and became seamstress at "Mayfair Models" in Shanghai. In April 1940 their parents were also able to emigrate via Genua to Shanghai.
