Herta FREUND (married: Schweiger), born on November 27th, 1912 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria), daughter of Arnold Freund (agent, Haifa/Palestine [Israel]), lived in Vienna's 2nd district, Schmelzgasse 6/11. She graduated for high school in summer 1932 (Schwarzwald-Frauenoberschule in Vienna), enrolled at the University of Vienna in winter term 1933/34 and was enrolled finally in the spring term 1938 at the Medical School in the 3rd year of her studies (Leaving Certificate ('Abgangszeugnis') was issued on June 24th, 1938).
She had to flee from Vienna and could emigrate to the USA in March 1939. First she lived in New York/NY, moved to Norfolk/Va. in 1941 and finally to Portsmouth/Va. in 1942. She could not continue with her medical studies and started to work as a housemaid and as practical nurse. From 1942 on she was a housewife and mother and helped her husband, Dr. Ernst Schweiger, who also had to flee from Austria in 1938. In September 1944 she was naturalized and became a US citizen.
In 1964 the "Fonds zur Hilfeleistung an politisch Verfolgte" (Hilfsfonds) in Vienna decided to grant her a compensation for her "Ausbildungsschaden" (lack of education).
