Faculty: Law School
Category: Deprivation of academic degree
Friedrich FLANDRAK (born on June 16th, 1893 in Vienna, died in 1944/45 in KZ Auschwitz [Oświęcim/Poland]), had graduated at the Law School at the University of Vienna on July 9th, 1917 with the academic degree 'Dr. phil.' and on December 20th, 1935 with the academic degree 'Dr.rer.pol.' and he had also graduated at the Philosophical School at the University of Vienna on March 29th, 1920 with the academic degree 'Dr. phil.' in History (dissertation: 'Römische Wirte und Wirtshaeuser'). He was married to Hedwig Flandrak, née Mosczisker (b. May 3rd, 1900 in Vienna) and in 1931 their son Hans Bernhard Flandrak was born. Friedrich Flandrak was enrolled in the Vienna List of Attorneys in 1934 and opened a law firm in Vienna 7th, Mariahilfer Strasse 74a. After the "Anschluss" he was persecuted for racist reasons. He had to flee and managed to emigrate to Switzerland and later to France in June 1938.
With an announcement in the newspaper "Deutscher Reichsanzeiger" of August 30th, 1941, he and his wife Hedwig Flandrak, née Mosczisker, were forcibly expatriated from the German Reich. When their citizenship was revoked, they became stateless and their assets were confiscated by the German Reich.

In times of Nazism he was therefor deprived of his three academic degrees on July 17th, 1942 with the racist argument, that he as a Jew was not considered dignified an academic degree of a German university ("eines akademischen Grades einer deutschen Hochschule unwuerdig"). He was arrested in southern France and imprisoned in the Drancy camp near Paris and deported from there on February 3rd, 1944, with Transport No. 67 to the Auschwitz concentration camp [Oświęcim/Poland]. He did not survive. It took 13 years since the deprivation – and a very long time since the end of Nazism – until the post mortem regranting of the three doctorates finally took place on May 15th, 1955.
