Category: Expelled student

Ernst FIALA, born on December 19th, 1914 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ("heimatberechtigt") for Vienna/Austria, citizenship 1938: Austria), son of Wilhelm/Vilmos Fiala (1887-1942, merchant) and Selma, née Haas (1882-1942), lived in Vienna 9th district, Rossauer Laende 39, was enrolled finally in the spring term 1938 at the Medical School in the 5th and last year of his studies.

In the spring term 1938 he could continue his studies in the context of the 2%-Numerus clausus of Jewish Students until the end of June (spring term 1938 was validated on October 5th, 1938, Leaving Certificate ("Abgangszeugnis") was issued on December 13th, 1938).

He then was "hospitant" at the Jewish Community | IKG Vienna (probably in the Rothschild-Hospital) and also tried to increase his chances for emigration in getting a driver's license and joining a cookery course as chauffeur or cook with dietology expertise. He was not able to emigrate to the USA or Australia, his preferred destinations, but he could emigrate to Yugoslavia (notice of departure to Yugoslavia on November 21th, 1939 in the central registration files).
From 1940 to Easter 1941 he was interned in the Hungarian internment camp Garany (Slovak: Hraň), then in a camp in Budapest.
His parents were deported on May 6th, 1942 from Vienna to Minsk [Belarus] and were murdered on May 10th, 1942 in nearby Maly Trostinec [Belarus].

Ernst Fiala survived and returned to Vienna (according to the central registration files on November 23rd, 1945 "returning from concentration camp Orschau". He is also mentioned at to the old address Rossauer Laende 39/11 in the "list of Glaubensjuden in Vienna 1946". In 1952 he was occupied at the Viennese Policlinic/Department Prof.  Oppolzer.

Probably he is the "Viennese physician Dr. Ernst Fiala, who survived the NS-regime as jewish refugee in Hungary", who was engaged to organize a memorial in Hofamt Priel/Lower Austria to honor the 169 Jewish refugees murdered there on May 2nd, 1945 (unveiled on May 2nd, 1993).
