Tankred FARKAS, born on July 11th, 1916 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ("heimatberechtigt") for Vienna/Austria, citizenship 1938: Austria), died on August 10th 1944 in France, was the son of Prof. Julius Farkas (1870-1949, retired official at the Austrian National Bank and retired professor for Hungarian language and culture at the diplomatic academy "Theresianum") and Elisabeth Farkas, née Linker (1883-1963), lived in Vienna 18th district, Michaelerstrasse 9/6. After he had graduated from high school (Realgymnasium) in Vienna in 1934 he began to study zoology, botany, mineralogy and geology at the Philosophical School of the University of Vienna and was married to Dkfm. Trude Fraunhofer (died in January 2000 in Portland, OR/USA).
Tankred Farkas was enrolled finally in the spring term 1938 at the Philosophical School in the 4th and last year of his studies and took courses in Geology, Mineralogy, Astronomy, Geodesy and petrography. He was discriminated as a so called "Mischling 2. Grades" but could continue his studies at first - valid until revoked. He served in the German Wehrmacht since December 1st, 1938. He was corporal in a armored reconnaissance company, gained several decorations (Eisernes Kreuz II, Panzersturmabzeichen, Ostmedaille, Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz, Sudetenmedaille and Heeressportabzeichen) and participated in the occupation of Czechoslovakia and in the German campaigns in Poland, Holland, Belgium and France.
On October 15th, 1940 Farkas applied for the allowance to continue and finish his studies of geology at the University of Vienna (intended career: geologist with scientific qualifications). The dean of the Philosophical School and the rector of the University of Vienna recommended the admission and the 'Reichserziehungsministerium' Berlin gave its allowance on November 19th, 1940, but Tankred Farkas had to stay in the army and was mortally wounded on August 10th, 1944 in the Normandy/France and died in Bellou en Houlme.
