Kurt ANSTREICHER (born on 4
th, 1911 in Oderberg, Austrian Silesia/Austro-Hungarian Empire [Bohumín, Czech Republic], died on 23
th, 2002 in USA) was assistant physician ("Hilfsarzt") at the II
nd Medical Univ.-Clinic (head: Prof. Jagic) at the Medical School of the University of Vienna, where ha has graduated to Dr.med. univ. [M.D.] on July 11
th, 1936.
He was persecuted in times of Nazism for racist reason as a Jew, lost his position in March 1938 and was forced to leave the university.
He had to flee from Austria and could emigrate to England, but was interned there as an "enemy alien" at the start of World War II. He was then sent to the Farnham internment camp in Canada, where he served as the camp doctor. He left the camp when he was offered a staff position at a provincial hospital in Brandon, Manitoba.
He re-trained in psychiatry and met Agathe Beaudry (also a psychiatrist) while in Canada. They got married and moved to Wilmington, Delaware (USA) in 1954 after he was offered a staff position at the Delaware State Hospital. He had a long career there, eventually becoming the medical director and finally the superintendent of the hospital. He retired from State service in 1976 but maintained a private practice in psychiatry until 1995.
His wife, Dr. Beaudry Anstreicher, first worked as a staff psychiatrist at the Delaware State Hospital, too, before joining the staff at the Wilmington Mental Hygiene Clinic. She worked at the Clinic for many years and retired as Director in 1983.
Kurt Anstreicher was a charter member of the Canadian Psychiatric Association, a life member and fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a member of the Royal Society of Medicine and many scientific and professional organizations including the Medical and Psychiatric Societies of Delaware.
He died on January 23
rd, 2002, burried in Saint Joseph on the Brandywine Cemetery, Greenville, New Castle County, Delaware, USA and is survived by his wife, three sons - Kurt of Iowa City, IA, Chris (b. 1957) of Elkton, MD and John (b. 1961) of Wilmington, DE - and six grandchildren.
