Herbert ANKER, born on September 16th, 1912 in Danzig [Gdansk/Poland] (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Danzig [Gdansk/Poland], Citizenship: City of Danzig), son of Arthur Anker (merchant in Danzig), studied at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau until April 1936. In fall term 1936/37 he continued his studies at the Medical School of the University of Vienna and lived in Vienna 9th district, Höfergasse 18/3.
Anker was enrolled finally in the spring term 1938 at the Medical School in the 6th year of his studies (Leaving Certificate ('Abgangszeugnis') was issued on April 2nd, 1938).
After dismissal from the University Herbert Anker had to flee from Vienna and was able to emigrate to Switzerland and complete his medical degree in Basel. After he finished in Basel, he went to Grenoble/France to study chemistry for a Ph.D. and to do further work in the medical field. Shortly after the war began, Herbert had to flee Paris in 1939 to escape occupation and went to Marseilles (Vichy France).
He was interned there until his parents Arthur and Helene Anker managed to obtain a US visa for him and he could leave Marseille after an incredible ordeal and arrived in New York City/USA and succeeded to get his Ph.D in chemistry. He got first married to Ruth, nee Reinisch (1913-1955) and then to Dorothy, nee Goldberg Bergson (1928-2016).
He deceased on May 18, 1976 in the USA.
