Sigmund ECKHAUS, born on November 17
th, 1912 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria), son of Elias (Elkune) Eckhaus (1880-1934, merchant) and Taube Eckhaus, née Marhoffer (1880-1942), lived in Vienna's 20
th district, Gaussplatz 7, was enrolled finally in the spring term 1938 at the Medical School in the 4
th year of his studies.
In 1938, after the takeover of power of National-Socialism he was forced to quit his studies for racist reason and to leave the University of Vienna (Leaving Certificate issued on June 22
nd, 1938).
His mother Taube Eckhaus could not escape from Vienna in time and was deported from Vienna's 2nd, Zirkusgasse 10/16 to Izbica on May 12th, 1942 and murdered. Sigmund Eckhaus and his brother Fritz (1919-1942) were able to escape from Vienna in time and reached Belgium and lived in Brussels as furtailor and jeweller, where they were captured and interned in the SS-Sammellager Mecheln [Mechelen|Malines/Belgium] in the Dossin barracks. From there, Fritz was deported to the German concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz [Oswiecim/Poland] on August 25
th, 1942, and Sigmund Eckhaus on October 24
th, 1942, where they were murdered.
