She had successfully passed the school-leaving examination (Matura) at the Frauenoberschule in Hollabrunn/Lower Austria on June 7th, 1933, and enrolled at the Philosophical School in the fall term of 1935/36, studying zoology. She was in the 3rd year of her studies in the spring term of 1938.

After the Anschluss in 1938, she was persecuted on racial grounds as a so-called "Mischling 1. Grades", but could provisionally - with revocation at any time - continue her studies until the spring term of 1939.
She had registered for the final examinations ("Rigorosen") in zoology on June 22nd, 1938, and had passed the first viva voce ("Philosophicum") on December 16th, 1938 (examiners: Tumlirz, Eibl). She had also submitted her dissertation on December 20th, 1940. Title of her dissertation: "The ontogenetic development of the closure apparatus of clausiliids, studied on Herilla bosniensis" (supervisors: Kühnelt, Weber). The dissertation had been approved on January 13th, 1941. On April 25th, 1941, she had also passed the second viva (examiners: Kühnelt, Weber, Knoll) and was able to receive her doctorate on May 26th, 1941.

Her father was already very interested in zoology, was a correspondent of the Natural History Museum in Vienna (NHM) and an internationally renowned mollusc researcher and malacologist (snails and mussels), who left his extensive private collection to the NHM.
Eleonore Edlauer became a high school professor of natural history and published, among other works, Naturgeschichtliche Beobachtungen in der Umgebung des Bundessportheimes Hintermoos bei Saalfelden (Beiträge zur neuzeitlichen Pädagogik, 1960).
