Hubert CERAL, born on March 14th, 1920 in Vienna (entitled to reside in Vienna, citizenship 1938: Austria), son of Major Franz Ceral (1885-1924, military) and Gisela Ceral, née Nawratil (tobacconist). He was a war orphan and lived with his mother and his grandfather and guardian Major General Ing. Ferdinand Nawratil in Vienna's 3rd district, Weißgerberlaende 56/ 7. Hubert Ceral passed his school-leaving examination (Matura) at the Schottengymnasium in Vienna's 1st district, Freyung 6, in 1938, then volunteered for the Reich Labor Service in Laa a. d. Thaya and Krems, Lower Austria (in the course of which he took part in the NSDAP Reichsparteitag) and began his first semester at the School of Medicine in the fall term of 1938/39.
Under National Socialism, however, he was only able to continue his studies "with reservations" as, although Roman Catholic, he was considered a "Mischling of the second degree".
When "Mischlinge" had to submit an application to the Reich Ministry of Education in Berlin for admission to study from the first trimester of 1940, Hubert Ceral also submitted an application to continue his studies on March 29th, 1940.
In accordance with the regulations, the dean of the responsible medical faculty, Prof. Eduard Pernkopf, submitted an expert opinion dated April 26, 1940, which "had to deal in particular with the personal impression of the applicant's personality and appearance. It must mention whether and to what extent characteristics of the Jewish race are externally recognizable in the applicant." [Decree of the Reich Ministry of Education, January 5th, 1940]. It stated: "Ceral is mixed race II. degree. An application was submitted to the Sippenamt to check the maternal grandmother, as the mother of this grandmother was Aryan, so he would then only be 1/8 Jewish, 3rd degree Mischling, i.e. full Aryan. He makes a thoroughly Aryan impression".
On June 19th, 1940, the Reich Ministry of Education in Berlin (WF 2541) informed the Rectorate that Hubert Ceral's application for possible admission to the examinations and the granting of a license to practice medicine had been forwarded to the responsible Reich Ministry of the Interior and Ceral, like most Jewish "Mischling of the second degree", was admitted to the medical examinations by the Reich Minister of the Interior "subject to the proviso that they do not thereby acquire a claim to the granting of a license to practice medicine. They will receive the license to practice medicine if the subsequent findings to be made shortly before the decision on the license show that there are no objections to be raised against the political and moral reliability of the candidates and their families. Accordingly, they may [...], insofar as they are actually descended from only one Jewish grandparent, [...] complete their medical training. You are requested to provide further information after positive clarification of your descent."
He was thus admitted to continue his studies for the time being, but at the end of the 2nd trimester in 1940 he had to leave the University of Vienna and was issued a leaving certificate on September 25th, 1940.
Apparently, he still managed to prove that he no longer had to be considered a "Mischling" according to Nazi criteria, as he was still able to complete his medical studies at the University of Vienna on May 6th, 1944 according to the old study regulations - without the reference to a possible "Mischling" status and the associated professional ban - and was awarded the title of "Dr. med. univ." doctorate.
Little is known about the rest of his life.
