Bertold BRUELL, born on May 20th, 1912 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria), son of Norbert Johann Bruell (salesman, 1885-1938) and his wife Ernestine Lili nee Gruener (1890-1972), lived in Vienna 20th district, Wallensteinplatz 4/11, was finally enrolled in spring term 1938 at the Medical School in the 5th year of his studies (Leaving Certificate ('Abgangszeugnis') was issued on September 23rd, 1938). In the spring term 1938 he was allowed to continue his studies in the context of the Numerus clausus of Jewish Students until the end of the term.
After the „Anschluss“ 1938 Bertold Bruell was able to emigrate from Austria. He left Europe on the ship S.S. Normandie from Le Havre/France to New York/USA on August 10th, 1938. He joined a friend, Maxwell N Weisman, living in Brooklyn. He completed his medical studies and worked as a psychiatrist in a mental hospital for a short time.
During a stay in San Francisco Bertold Bruell met Edith C. Chapman (1921-2005), a nurse. They married on July 24th, 1950 in Lake Tahoe, Nevada and had three children, Stephanie Bruell, Mark Chapman Bruell and David Harrison Bruell.
Bruell settled as a family physician in Federal Way, Washington, and ran a private practice for 30 years. Besides, he also worked at St. Joseph Hospital and at Auburn General Hospital in Washington and participated in the founding of St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way, which was opened in 1987.
Bertold Bruell died on March 19th, 1995 in Federal Way at the age of 82 years and was buried on March 21st, 1995 at Washington Memorial Park Cemetery in SeaTac, Washington.
