Paula BRECHER (nee REHBERGER), born on August 23rd, 1902 in Vienna, daughter of Moritz Rehberger, began to study at the Philosophical School of the University of Vienna with an emphasis on psychology in 1933.
She wasn't enrolled at the Philosophical School any more in 1938, but was preparing for the final exams ('Rigorosen'). She registered for the final exams in Psychology on October 14th, 1938, and passed the first 'Rigorosum' on October 31st, 1938. Her dissertation 'Eine psychologische Untersuchung zur Frage der Angst' was accepted on October 24th, 1938, and she also passed the second 'Rigorosum' on October 26th, 1938. She could finally finish her studies and graduated on October 31st, 1938, but only with the discriminating ceremony of a 'Nichtarierpromotion', which included at the same time that she was banned from her profession. With this, Paula Brecher was the last female jewish student, who was able to graduate in psychology at the University of Vienna before the ultimate exclusion of Jewish students.
