Dina BRAUDE (married RAPPAPORT), born on October 6
th, 1915 in Minsk/Russia [Belarus] (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria), lived in Vienna's 6
th district, Gumpendorfer Strasse 76, was enrolled finally in the fall term 1937/38 at the Medical School in the 4
th year of her studies (fall term 1937/38 was validated on February 8
th, 1938).
In 1938, after the takeover of power of National-Socialism she was forced to quit her studies for racist reason and to leave the University of Vienna (Leaving Certificate ("Abgangszeugnis") was issued on July 13
th, 1938).
Dina Braude had to flee as well as her brother,
Jefim Braude, who was in the middle of his final examinations in chemistry.
Her fellow student and future husband
Henry Rappaport (1913-2003) had also studied medicine at the University of Vienna since 1931 but had graduated in 1937 - together with him Dina Braude was able to emigrate via Switzerland to Montpellier/France where Henry Rappaport could work at the department of pathology at the University in Montpellier in fall 1938 and they married. Only in 1940 they could continue to emigrate to the USA. In 1943 they obtained the US-citizenship.
Dina Braude Rappaport completed her medical studies at the University of Chicago and began to work as a physician, while her husband served in a Medical Corps of the US-Army until 1946 and subsequently started an academic career as a pathologist - Prof. em. Dr. med. Dr. h. c. mult. gained a honorary doctorate of the University of Vienna in 1995.
Dina Braude Rappaport died on April 30
th, 1990 and was buried at Los Angeles National Cemetery, where her widower Henry Rappaport was buried in 2003, too.
