Hanne Eva ZIEGLER (ROSENTHAL), born on June 10th, 1919 in Berlin/Germany (entitled residency ("heimatberechtigt") for Berlin, citizenship 1938: Germany), daughter of Dr. Josef Ziegler (physician) and Elly Ziegler, née Roenau, lived in Vienna's 6th district, Mariahilfer Strasse 47, was enrolled finally in the spring term 1938 at the Philosophical School in the 1st year of her studies and took courses in Chemistry.
After the takeover of power of National-Socialism in March 1938 she was forced to quit her studies for racist reason without a chance to graduate. She requested to continue her studies in the context of the 2% Numerus Clausus of Jewish Students, was first allowed to continue for about two months, but finally was forced to leave the University of Vienna.
She had to flee Vienna and was able to emigrate to British Mandatory Palestine [Israel] in time, where she lived in New Zionah and was granted citizenship in the British Mandatory of Palestine in Jerusalem on January 21st, 1941. She later emigrated from there via Port Said/Egypt on the SS El Nil to the USA, where she arrived in New York, NY on June 10th, 1943 and soon found work as a chemist. On June 16th, 1945 in Chicago, Illinois, she married Paul Rosenthal (1916-2017), a precision mechanic from Wuerzburg/Germany, who had already emigrated to New York in 1937, and they had two children together (Dorothy Ann, Susan Jean). She became a U.S. citizen on September 30th, 1943 and lived and worked with her family in Chicago, IL.
Hannah E. Rosenthal, née Hanne Eva Ziegler, died on January 28th, 2012 in Vermont/USA.
