Georg (Ernst) BOXER, born on February 2nd, 1915 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria), son of Dr. Arnold Boxer (lawyer) and his wife Helene nee Kreitner, lived in Vienna 1st district, Teinfaltstrasse 7. He studied medicine at the University of Vienna since 1933 and also worked as a demonstrator of medical biology at the university since 1935.
Boxer was finally enrolled in spring term 1938 at the Medical School in the 5th year of his studies (spring term 1938 was validated on November 28th, 1938). In spring term 1938 he requested to continue his studies in the context of the Numerus clausus of Jewish Students, but was rejected.
After the “Anschluss” 1938 Georg Boxer emigrated to Great Britain, where he became assistant of biochemistry at the University of Cambridge.
He married Lily Behar in 1940, they had two sons, Steven G. and Peter A.
In 1940 he emigrated to the USA. As a graduate student he studied at the Columbia University from 1941 to 1943 and subsequently became teaching assistant at the Department of biological Chemistry. In 1944 Boxer completed his studies and was graduated 'Ph.D.' (dissertation: 'Disturbances in Lipid Metabolism with the Aid of Isotopes'). Concurring he worked as a research associate at the Office of Scientific Research And Development from 1943 to 1945.
In 1945 George Boxer went into the private sector and joined the staff of the pharmaceutical company Merck & Co., initially as a research associate. In 1957 he was promoted director of the cancer research group at Merck Institute and in 1962 director of the biological cancer research at Merck, Sharp and Dohme Research Labs. In 1966 he finally became executive director of Merck Institute for Therapeutic Research in Rahway, New Jersey.
In his work, George Boxer dealt primarily with the use of isotopes in studies on antibiotics, various aspects of metabolism, and enzymology. He was a member of several scientific associations, e.g. American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Chemical Society, American Society of Biological Chemists, Royal Society of Medicine and American Association for Cancer Research.
George E. Boxer died on March 14th, 1968 at the age of 53 years.
