Robert Kenneth WEINBACH (later: SUTHERLAND), born on September 29
th, 1915 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria), son of Dr. Emanuel Weinbach (lawyer) and
Marja, née Fichman, lived in Vienna's 9
th district, Schubertgasse 16/20, was enrolled finally in the spring term 1938 at the Medical School in the 4
th year of his studies.
In 1938, after the takeover of power of National-Socialism he was forced to quit his studies for racist reason and to leave the University of Vienna.
His father Dr. Emanuel Weinbach (1882-1958) also lost his law office in Vienna's 1st district, Gonzagagasse 12, in 1938 for racist reasons and had to flee from Vienna. He was able to emigrate with his family to England/Great Britain in 1938, where he lived and worked with his wife (died 1953) until his death in 1958.
Robert Weinbach, however, continued to emigrate alone to the USA as early as 1939 and sailed from Southampton on the "
SS Manhattan" to the USA where he arrived in New York City, NY on March 3
rd, 1939. He initially moved to Columbus, Ohio, worked as a pharmaceutical researcher at the Billings Hospital of the University of Chicago and applied for US citizenship in late 1939, which he received in late 1944, changing his name to Robert Kenneth Sutherland. In October 1940 he was mustered into the U.S. Army (at that time he was working at Ohio State University Columbus).
He later lived and worked in various cities in Illinois, USA.
Robert K Sutherland, né Weinbach, died on July 7th, 1989 in Cook County, Illinois/USA.
