Stefan WALLER, born on January 14
th, 1917 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria), son of Louis Elieser Waller (1861-1942) and Caecile, née Stein, lived in Vienna's 1
st district, Wipplingerstrasse 3574/11, was enrolled finally in the spring term 1938 at the Law School in the 3
rd year of his studies (in the spring term 1938 he requested to continue his studies in the context of the Numerus clausus of Jewish Students, but was rejected). He married Annie Rosalie Baumgarten (1917-1940) while still in Vienna-Leopoldstadt on November 28
th, 1938.
He emigrated to Belgium in 1939, was deported to France in 1940 and interned there in several camps - in Saint-Cyprien, Gurs and Château de Tombebouc - and later emigrated via Bilbao/Spain to the USA on April 19
th, 1941 with the
SS Magallanes arriving on May 24
th, 1941 in New York City, NY, initially staying with his cousin Dr. Felix Schwarz in Brooklyn, but quickly moving to Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts and working at the Bon Ton Curtain Co. Shortly thereafter, he was mustered into the U.S. Army. His parents were deported from Vienna to Theresienstadt in 1942 and murdered there a few weeks later.
His half-brothers (from his father's first marriage) were able to emigrate in time: Dr. Rudolf Waller (b. 1898), a lawyer, emigrated to the USA in 1940, went to Munich after the war and became managing director of the Bernheimer Art Shop, Hugo Waller (b. 1893) was managing director of the Louis Waller company until 1938, then deported to Dachau/Buchenwald, released, emigrated to England, interned as an enemy alien, deported to Canada and then lived there in Montreal and Leopold Wallner (b. 1891) who emigrated to France and also stayed there and lived in Marseille.
Stefan Martin Waller served in the US Navy 1943-1945 and later continued his studies: college in Boston, MA Storekeeper's School in Sampson and became a Certified Public Accountant (CPA examination 1965) and lived and worked in Los Angeles. He was married to Margot, née Sonn (1921-2005) since October 29
th, 1945 and they had several children.
He died on February 27
th, 2004 in Los Angeles, California/USA and is buried at Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Culver City, Los Angeles County, California/USA.
