Category: Deprivation of academic degree
Gertrude WACHTEL (born on December 30th, 1912 in Vienna; mother Renée Wachtel, father deceased), lived in Vienna 8th district, Lammgasse 10, had graduated at the Medical School at the University of Vienna on March 6th, 1937 with the academic degree 'Dr. med.'. Two months after the "Anschluss" (May 11th, 1938) her brother Hans Heinz Wachtel (born on August 19th, 1917 in Vienna), who studied at the University of World Trade in Vienna ("Hochschule fuer Welthandel", today: Vienna University of Economics and Business) from 1936 until fall term 1937/38, made an application at the welfare center of the Jewish Community Vienna to support himself, his sister and his mother on leaving the country. By the end of July 1938 the family emigrated to Peru. In times of Nazism Gertrude Wachtel was deprived of her academic degree on July 14th, 1942 with the racist argument, that she as a Jew was not considered dignified an academic degree of a German university ('eines akademischen Grades einer deutschen Hochschule unwürdig'). Her brother, Hans Heinz Wachtel, later settled in the USA and received the Austrian citizenship on February 2nd, 1994. It took 13 years since the deprivation - and a very long time since the end of Nazism - until the regranting of the doctorate took finally place on May 15th, 1955. Lit.: information from Pd.
