The family moved to Vienna soon after his birth and lived from 1919 to 1938 in Vienna's 4th district, Petzvalgasse 4. Karl BLOCH gained his secondary school leaving certificate ("Maturazeugnis/Reifepruefungszeugnis") from "Realgymnasium" in Viennas 5th district, Rainergasse, in 1937 and started his medical studies at the University of Vienna in fall term 1937/38 at the Medical School. His first year of studies also was his last (fall term 1937/38 was validated on February 3rd, 1938). After the "Anschluss" he was forced to leave university for racist reason.
He could flee with his parents to Palestine [Israel] in 1938, where he stayed for the rest of his life. In 1948 he married a Viennese girl, Inge Rosenman (born 16. April 1922 in Vienna) and they had three daughters (Liora, Einat und Irit). In Palestine he could not continue with his medical studies, but could start to study technical sciences at the Technion in Haifa. In 1943 he gained a B.Sc. degree in chemistry, in 1944 the Dipl.Ing. degree and in 1958 a M.Sc. in metallurgy. From 1943-1945 he worked at Palestine Potash, at the Dead Sea, 1945-1949 in the oil refinery CRL, Haifa (military service 1948 at IDF) and from 1950 until retirement 1987 in the Israel military industries [TAAS]. As reservist he was not forced to fight in 1948/1966. 1962-1980 he was part of the faculty of Technion in Haifa, head of the metallurgic department.
1956 he changed his name from Karl Bloch to Karel Bar Avi. Since 1941 he was citizen of Palestine, from 1948 an citizen of Israel. 1976 he regained also his Austrian citizenship.
He lived in Aharonovitzstr. 14, 4445214 Kfar-Saba, Israel and died aged 96 on September 5, 2015 in Israel.
