Ernesta SPIELER (nee SALZMANN), born March 1, 1908 in Dzikow/Poland (mother tongue Polish, entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Sokal/Poland, after her marriage: Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: first Poland, after her marriage in 1934: Austria), daughter of Jakob Salzmann (white-collar employee), lived with her father in Vienna's 2nd district, Obermuellnerstrasze 3/2/27, since her marriage 1934 with her husband in Rembrandtstrasze 1/7. She gained her secondary school leaving certificate ("Reifepruefungszeugnis") from "Bundesreformgymnasium" in Vienna's 8th district, Albertgasse 20, in 1926, started her medical studies at the University of Vienna in spring term 1926 and was enrolled finally in spring term 1935 at the Medical School in the 5th and last year of her studies.
Since then she did not have to take courses anymore but was preparing for the final examinations ('Rigorosen'). A graduation seemed out of reach after the so called "Anschluss" - but on July 18th, 1938 the 'Absolutorium' was issued, after a long time of uncertainty she could finally finish her studies and graduate on July 21st, 1938, but only with the discriminating ceremony of a 'Nichtarierpromotion', which included at the same time that she was banned from her profession.
For her last months in Vienna she lived in the 9th district, Berggasse 30/4/12a (March to June 1939) before she finally succeeded to emigrate to Great Britain in the end of June 1939.
