Leopold SCHMIDT, born on November 1st, 1915 in Vienna/Austro-Hungarian Empire [Austria] (entitled residency ("heimatberechtigt") for Vienna/Austria, citizenship 1938: Austria), son of Leopold Schmidt (civil servant), lived in Vienna's 20th district, Perinetgasse 1/7, was enrolled in the spring term 1938 at the Medical School in the 4th year of his studies.
He was persecuted under National Socialism after the Anschluss for racial reasons - he was considered a "first-degree mixed race" - and was only able to continue his studies provisionally at first - valid until revoked. He nevertheless managed to complete his studies on October 27th, 1939.
He lived in Vienna's 15th district, Pilgeringasse 22/5/188 and first ordained in Vienna's 21st district, Weisselgasse 14/44 and then at his home address and worked as a general practitioner in Vienna until the end of 1950 - until he was recognized as a specialist in physical medicine. He then opened a practice for physical medicine, worked as a sports physician and was head of the Institute for Physical Medicine at the Hanusch Hospital (1968), was appointed Medical Councillor and retired at the end of 1980, shortly before being appointed Senior Medical Councillor ("Obermedizinalrat").
He was married to Dr.phil. Erika Schmidt (1922-2024).
Obermedizinaltrat Dr. Leopold Schmidt died at the age of 91 on June 20th, 2007 in Vienna and is buried at the cemetery in Vienna Sievering.
