Salomon SCHLAM, born on December 12th, 1917 in Lemberg, Galicia/Austro-Hungarian Empire [later Lwów/Poland, today Lwiw|Львів/Ukraine] (entitled residency ("heimatberechtigt") for Vienna/Austria, citizenship 1938: Austria), son of Zalke Schlam (1874-1943, merchant) and Hinde Schlam, née Salzberg (1878-1932), lived in Vienna's 20th district, Heinzelmanngasse 6, was last enrolled in the fall term of 1937/38 at the Medical School in the 3rd year of his studies.
In 1938, after the takeover of power of National-Socialism he was forced to quit his studies for racist reason and to leave the University of Vienna (Leaving Certificate ("Abgangszeugnis") was issued on June 24th, 1938).
Salomon Schlam had to flee Vienna and, together with his older brother Dr. Isaak Schlam (1910-1979), a physician, they were able to emigrate to England in 1939. However, after the outbreak of war, they were both interned as enemy aliens in Kitchener Camp in Richborough, Sandwich, where Salomon worked in the accounts department and Isaak in the first-aid-station. Released again, they were able to leave Liverpool on January 30th, 1940, on the SS Georgic for the USA, where they arrived in New York City, NY, on February 11th, 1940. Their first contact address was their cousin Natt Weinstock in Manhattan, NYC, NY.
Salomon Schlam was unable to continue his medical studies under the conditions of emigration and initially worked as a helper for a furrier and later became a department store manager. In 1940 he was drafted into the US Army and was still living with his brother in New York at the time. He became an American citizen in 1945, lived in Washington D.C. in 1950 and was already working in the department store business. In 1955 he married Barbara Ann Kimble (1931-1998) in Charleston, SC and they had two children. They lived and worked in Alexandria, Virginia.
Salomon Schlam died on January 16th, 2001, in Alexandria, VA/USA.
