Georg Herbert BING, born on January 9th, 1913 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ("heimatberechtigt") for Vienna/Austria, citizenship 1938: Austria), son of Richard Bing (1868-1921, bank clerk Wiener Bankenverein) and Alice Bing, née Rosenberg (1879-1942). He lived as a half-orphan with his mother and his brother Karl in Vienna's 9th district, Porzellangasse 25, was enrolled finally in the fall term 1937/38 at the Philosophical School in the 5th and last year of his studies and took courses in chemistry.
He was forced to abandon his studies and leave the University of Vienna under National Socialism after the Anschluss for racist reasons ("Absolutorium" issued on May 18th, 1938).
He was forced to flee Vienna, having previously resigned from the Jewish Community in August 1938 and converted to the Anglican Church. On September 14th, 1938, he married Dr. Elisabeth Groak (1916-2012) at the registry office in Vienna-Leopoldstadt before they were able to emigrate to Australia together with his mother-in-law, his brother Dr. iur. Karl Michael Bing (1908-1992) and his sister-in-law Friederike Bing, née Flachs (1911-1984) at the beginning of 1939. They arrived in Sydney with the SS Ormond on January 12th, 1939.
His mother Alice did not manage to leave in time and was deported from Vienna's 2nd district, Novaragasse 37 to Maly Trostinec/Poland on August 17th, 1942 and murdered there four days later.
George and Elizabeth Bing, as they called themselves in Australia, received Australian citizenship on September 23rd, 1944 and had two children: Bernard Charles (b. 1942) and Joan Alice (b. 1946, teacher). Herbert George Bing worked in Australia in the chemical industry - Timbrol Ltd., Union Carbide Australia, Geigy Ag J R - and obtained numerous patents in the 1950s and 1960s.
George H. Bing died on May 9th, 1979 in Balwyn, Melbourne, and was buried at Springvale Cemetery, Greater Dandenong City, Melbourne, VIC/Australia.
