Erika REPPEN (married: HYDE), born on January 25th, 1913 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Kassel/Germany, Citizenship: Germany), daughter of Kurt Reppen (manufacturer, died in 1937), lived in Wien 3, Hießgasse 15/16. After she had attended the
Wiener Frauen-Erwerb-Verein, she was enrolled at the University of Vienna from fall term 1932/33 until finally in the spring term 1938 at the Philosophical School in the 6th year of her studies and took courses in Chemistry. She had nearly finished her studies, just weeks away from defending her thesis, but was no more allowed to graduate.
She was able to emigrate to the USA, but couldn't finish or restart her studies under the circumstances of emigration and worked as a lab technician in a hospital in Washington D. C. first. Later on she worked as a bursar and then an employment interviewer for the State of New York. "She never could be the chemist she had always wanted to be. She still referred to herself as a scientist", as her daughter mentioned.
She died on May 21, 2008 at the age of 95.
