Heinz REINER, born on February 12
th, 1918 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ("heimatberechtigt") for Klosterneuburg/Lower Austria, Citizenship 1938: Austria), son of Julius Reiner (editorial journalist) and Dora Reiner, née Grosser. He lived with his parents in Vienna's 19
th district, Radelmayergasse 2, was enrolled last in the spring term of 1938 at the Medical School in the 2
nd year of his studies.
In 1938, after the takeover of power of National-Socialism he was forced to quit his studies for racist reason and to leave the University of Vienna (Leaving Certificate ("Abgangszeugnis") was issued on May 25
th, 1938).
After the "Anschluss" he had to flee from Vienna and was able to leave Austria in time without his parents and to emigrate via Le Havre/France to the USA to his uncle Frederick Reiner. He arrived with the
SS Normandie in New York, NY, on August 15
th, 1938. Later he lived with his uncle in Boston, MA, and joined the
Suffolk University when he enlisted in the U.S. Army in November 1940. After receiving his U.S. Citizenship in 1942 he applied for and was accepted into Officer's Candidate School. He served with distinction during WWII, working as an interrogator and was awarded a bronze star for his service during the Battle of the Bulge (Belgum 1944/45).
According to the cenus list of 1950 he lived in Westwood, Norfolk/MA, was married to Mary Elizabeth Harrison (1919–2001) and they had a daughter Mary Dora (1945), later also a second daughter, Jane.
Later he served in Korea and Vietnam.
Howard Reiner was unable to pursue a medical career, but obtained a Bachelor's degree from
Tufts University in Romance Languages, a Masters Degree from
Boston University in French Literature, and a professional diploma from
Columbia Teacher's College in French Educations.
In 1969, he retired from the Army and taught German and French at
Wheeling Jesuit [University] and at
West Liberty College [University] in West Virginia.
Howard Reiner died on December 27
th, 2008 in Wheeling, WV/USA.
