Fanni PILPEL (married Fay WALTER, born on February 28
th, 1916 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ("heimatberechtigt") for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria), daughter of Emil Leon Pilpel (accountant), lived in Vienna's 9
th district, Clusiusgasse 4/8, was enrolled finally in the fall term 1937/38 at the Philosophical School in the 4th year of her studies and took courses in German and English language and literature Studies.
She had registered for the final examinations, the viva voces ("Rigorosen") on November 19
th, 1937 but didn't succeed to pass the first Rigorosum on January 15
th, 1938 and was reprobated for three months. After the "Anschluss" she was no more allowed to take the viva and had to quit her studies.
She managed to flee Vienna before the outbreak of War, having gained employment as a nanny with a British Jewish family. She also succeeded in finding a position for her younger sister, Lottie Pilpel, but was unable to secure employment for her parents, who had retrained as domestic staff (butler and cook). They were executed by firing squad at Maly Trostinec, Belarus.
Immediately after the War, Fanni Pilpel found employment with the US Air Force working as a translator in the American Zone, where she met her future husband Eric Walter (1915-2015) whom she married in 1946 and who also was a refugee who was held in prison as a Communist in Mlada Boleslav/Czechoslovakia by the Gestapo. They both settled in England, initially Manchester, where there was a sizeable refugee community.
Fay Walter, née Pilpen, was unable to finance any further studies and did not pursue a career as such, working mainly in clerical / book keeping roles.
Fay Walter, née Fanni Pilpel, died on August 24
th, 2007 in Frognal, Greater London, England/Grest Britain and was burried at Jewish Cemetery in Bushey, Hertfordshire, England.
