Josef BERLJAWSKY, born on May 6
th, 1911 in Przemysl, Galicia/Austro-Hungarian Empire [Przemysl/Poland] (entitled residency ("heimatberechtigt") for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship 1938: Austria), son of Moses Berljawsky (photographer) and his wife Toba, lived in Viennas 17
th district, Kalvarienberggasse 46/18, was enrolled finally in the fall term 1937/38 at the Philosophical School in the 3
rd year of his studies and took courses in Musicology.
In 1938, after the takeover of power of National-Socialism he was forced to quit his studies for racist reason and to leave the University of Vienna.
He had to flee Vienna and could emigrate in time to Great-Britain and arrived in Canada 1939, founded the Montreal Orchestral Society in 1954 and Ottawa Musica Viva in 1968. He taught in Montreal and Ottawa, for some years commuting between the two cities. A manuscript treatise of his life's work has been issued and published (1987) by former students of Ottawa Musica Viva and also was a painter.
He was married had three children, Richard Marvin, Alexander Gordon (born 1945) and Eva Milton.
He died on February 17, 1982 in Ottawa/Canada.
