Sándor (Alexander) WOLF, born on December 21st, 1871 in Eisenstadt/Burgenland (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Eisenstadt, Citizenship: Austria), died on January 2nd, 1946 in Haifa/Israel, lived in Wien 1, Falkestraße 6. He run excavations near Eisenstadt, was very active as art collector and was enrolled finally in the spring term 1938 at the Philosophical School in the 17th year of his studies as extraordinary student and took courses in Art History.
In April 1938 he was arrested by the Gestapo, but he was able to emigrate to Haifa/Israel in 1939. Sándor Wolf died in 1946, while he was preparing his return to Eisenstadt/Austria. The Burgenland county museum received his extensive collection, which is today mainly owned by the Galerie Fischer in Luzern/Switzerland.
The exhibition "Ausgegrenzt, Vertrieben, Ermordet" (January 22nd - May 14th, 2010) at the Department of History of Art of the University of Vienna is dedicated to the memory of Sándor Wolf and 20 other former students of the University of Vienna focused on art history.
