Martha (Mimi M.) Hauer, verh. Schapira

Martha HAUER, born on January 25th, 1914 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ("heimatberechtigt") for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria), daughter of Julius Hauer (1873-1956, accountant) and Johanna Hauer, née Mehler (1885-1974, business woman), lived in Vienna's 20th district, Kaschlgasse 6. On June 27th, 1933, she had passed her school-leaving examination (Reifepruefung/Matura) at the Frauenoberschule in Vienna's 1st district, and almost two years later, in the spring term of 1935, she began studying at the University of Vienna. She was enrolled finally in the spring term 1938 at the Philosophical School in the 4th year of her studies and took courses in History, English and Romance languages and literature Studies.

She registered for the final exams ("Rigorosen") on December 20th, 1937 and in 1938, after the takeover of power of National-Socialism, she requested to continue her studies in the context of the 2%-Numerus clausus of Jewish Students in the spring term 1938, but was rejected and was forced to quit her studies for racist reason and to leave the University of Vienna.

She had to flee Vienna and was able to emigrate to England/Great Britain in time with a domestic service permit and lived as a maid in Wallasey near Liverpool in 1939 and was exempted from internment as an enemy alien. In 1941 she lived in Manchester.
Her parents were also able to flee Vienna in time and emigrate to La Paz/Bolivia, from where they emigrated to the USA in February 1941. After arriving in New York, NY/USA, they moved to Norfork, Virginia, where theris oldest daughter Hedwig had emigrated with her husband, Joseph Schechner, graduate od the Vienna Medical School in 1934 who had been expelled from Vienna, too.
In 1943, Martha Schechner also emigrated with the SS Britannic from Liverpool, England/Great Britain ín to the USA, arriving in New York, NY/USA on November 29th, 1943, with the goal of joining her parents in Norfolk, Virginia (7205 Remsen street, #3). However, she then remained in New York, married, applied for U.S. citizenship, and became a naturalized citizen as Mimi M. Schapira on June 2nd, 1947, living at 11 W 8th St., Apt 4a in New YorkNY/USA.

Mimi M Schapira, née Martha Hauer, died on May 15th, 1997 in New York, NY/USA.
