Ludwig JEHLE, born on February 19th, 1871 in Prerau, Moravia/Austria-Hungary [Přerov/Czech Republic], was a private lecturer in pediatrics with the title of associate professor ("Pd. tit.ao.Prof.") at the Medical School of the University of Vienna in 1938. He had studied medicine at the University of Vienna, where he received his "Dr. med.univ." on July 13th, 1895. in 1896/97 e had worked as an assistant at the internal department at the Kaiser-Franz-Joseph-Spital and as a prosectural adjunct there in 1897-1900. In in 1901/02 he was working at the pediatric department of the Vienna General Polyclinic under Ferdinand Fruehwald and from 1902 to 1919 at the University Pediatric Clinic in the General Hospital in Vienna.
In 1910 he had habilitated at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna and became a private lecturer in pediatrics. In the same year he was appointed primary physician ("Primararzt") at the Vienna General Polyclinic and head of the 2nd Pediatric Department there.
In January 1917 he was awarded the title (but not the function) of an "extraordinary professor" at the University of Vienna.
He was a member of the Society of Physicians in Vienna ("Gesellschaft der Aerzte in Wien") as well as the Society for Pediatrics and was a recipient of the Oppolzer Prize of the Vienna University Medical School. He had two daughters with his wife Lilly Jehle, Christl Kronfeld, née Jehle (married to Prof. Dr. Peter Kronfeld) and Maria Winterstein, née Jehle, (married to Peter Winterstein). Under National Socialism, the Vienna General Polyclinic lost its autonomy and several departments were closed, including the pediatric department, which Jehle had headed until then. Although Roman Catholic, Jehle was persecuted under National Socialism on racial grounds as a "Mischling 2nd degree." He died before his venia legendi could be withdrawn at the University of Vienna. Ludwig Jehle died at the age of 68 on March 1st, 1939 in Vienna.
