Julius SCHWARCZ (later: John Julius SANDERS), born on August 13th, 1912 in Vienna/Austria (entitled residency ("heimatberechtigt") for Vienna/Austria, citizenship 1938: Austria), son of Adolf Schwarcz, who immigrated from Hungary (born on November 1st, 1884, owner of the inn in Vienna's 17th district, Ottakringer Strasse 50, later in Vienna's 16th district, Lerchenfelder Guertel 49) and Berta Schwarcz, née Ehrenthal (born July 13th, 1943), lived in Vienna's 9th district, Bruennlbadgasse 18/10b, was last enrolled in the fall term 1937/38 at the Medical School in the 5th and last year

He was already in the examination stage at the time of the "Anschluss" and was initially not allowed completing his medical studies for racist reasons. However, he was able to finish his studies on October 31st, 1938 ("Absolutorium" was issued on November 3rd, 1938), but only in the context of a discriminatory "non-Aryan doctorate" and with a simultaneous professional ban in the entire German Reich.

His younger sister Elisabeth Low, née Schwarcz (1913-2003), who also studied at the Medical School, was expelled from the University of Vienna (she was later able to emigrate to Palestine [Israel] and died in 2003 in Tel Aviv, Israel). His younger sister Magdalena Barber, née Schwarcz (1918-2003) was able to emigrate to the USA and died in 2003 in New Jersey, USA).

Julius Schwarcz was able to escape to Great Britain and wanted to complete his specialist training there, lived in London, 4 Adolphus Road, but for the time being could only find work in a gas mask factory and as a parking attendant. He was finally interned in 1940 as an "enemy alien" like most German and Austrian immigrants and deported to Australia on the ship HMT "Dunera". Once there, he was interned in the enemy alien camp at Hay, NSW, in 1940-1941, and in the camp at Tatura, Victoria, in 1941-1942.

After his release in June 1942, he did not return to England but remained in Australia, joining the Army's Australia Labour Corps and stationed at Camp Pell, now the site of the Royal Children's Hospital. He was discharged from the army again in November 1942.

He married Elizabeth Hildegard Tuchman (1912-1977), a native of Switzerland, in Victoria in 1943, and they had a son, Robert Sanders and a daughter, Ann Sanders. Julius Schwarcz received his Australian naturalization certificate in 1946 became an Australian citizen in 1949 and anglicized his name to John Julian Sanders in 1950. According to his grandson, he lived as an Australian, a socialist and a democrat in a working-class district of Melbourne, loved classical music (especially Gustav Mahler), literature and the fine arts (especially Francisco Goya). However, he was also very interested in contemporary world political events and was also an avid sportsman (cricket, tennis, soccer, handball, table tennis, athletics and soccer). He was also later the doctor of the Footscray football team.

As his Austrian medical qualification was not recognized in Australia, as was the case with many doctors who had emigrated to Australia, he had to study again, now in English, and attended the University of Melbourne, Victoria, which he managed to do with a lot of perseverance and determination. His wife supported the families by working as a seamstress during this time, providing a substantial contribution to the family income. In 1950 he graduated from Melbourne University and from 1946 worked as a pathology technician at Austin Hospital, Victoria. and then practiced medicine in Horsham, Victoria, and in Yarraville, Victoria. He later joined the Medical Centre Footscray, Victoria, where he later became senior partner, and which was licensed as a family medicine teaching practice from 1976. He focused on obstetrics there, delivering over 3,000 babies. In addition, he also practiced at several local hospitals.

After nearly 30 years, he retired from general practice and became a surgical assistant to a general surgeon and a gynecologist and did not retire until 1988, at the age of 76, but continued to care for private patients. He did not retire from the medical profession altogether until 2006, at the age of 93.

John Julian Sanders, nee Julius Schwarcz, died on August 9th, 2008 in Footscray, Maribyrnong City, VIC/Australia.
