Jakob BUTTERMANN, born on November 21st, 1908 in Dobromil/Poland (entitled residency ('heimatberechtigt') for Vienna/Austria, Citizenship: Austria),lived in Vienna's 2nd district, Lassingleitnerplatz 1, was enrolled finally in the fall term 1937/38 at the Philosophical School in the 4th and last year of his studies and took courses in History. In 1938, after the takeover of power of National-Socialism he was forced to quit his her studies for racist reason and to leave the University of Vienna. He had to flee from Vienna and was initially able to emigrate to France and lived in Bordeaux. After the occupation of France he was able to emigrate via Lisbon/Portugal to the USA where he arrived together with his brother Ludwig (born 1910) with the SS Nea Hellas on August 11th, 1940 in New York City, NY. He declared as profession: "fur merchant", lived for the time being with his brother-in-law Nahum Brind in Manhattan, New York City, NY and applied for US citizenship in May 1941.
